Your plan’s formulary: What it is and why it’s important.
Understanding your formulary means knowing what medications are covered and how you can save.
Be prepared for changes.
Your formulary is the list of medications your plan covers. For covered medications, instead of paying the full cost, you pay the copay or coinsurance required by your plan. The formulary is reviewed regularly and sometimes changes are made to help make sure you can get the medications you need at the lowest possible cost.
Here’s what you can expect:
Quarterly
Each quarter, the formulary is reviewed and sometimes changes are made. Updates go into effect on the first day of January, April, July and October.
Up to 2 months before
If you’re affected by a formulary change, we’ll let you know two months in advance. This is so you’ll have time to discuss your options with your doctor and get a new prescription if you need one.
Day of the change
On or after the day the updated formulary takes effect, you can use the Check Drug Cost tool to see how any changes affect the cost of your medications.
If your doctor determines that you should continue taking your current medication instead of making a change, they can request an exception (called a prior authorization, or PA). If the PA request is approved, your current medication will be covered.
